Must See: Invincible (2006) ***½ 105 min. starring Mark Wahlberg, Greg Kinnear, and Elizabeth Banks – This film is based on the real like events of Vince Papale, a 30-year old trying to make in the NFL during the wonderful 1970’s. This is a tremendously enjoyable picture from the start. The sets and scenes transported me back in time to the 70s. The characters are fresh, real, and all express their woes and dreams in this film from Vince’s buddies in the bar to the Coach Vermeil to the players on the field. It’s the “train that could” theme executed perfectly. The best of many great scenes, reminiscent of the final interview between Wil Smith and the owner of the company in “Pursuit of Happiness”, is when Vince brings in his play book into Coach Vermeil’s office for the decision of whether he got a spot on the Philadelphia Eagles. I particularly enjoyed the authenticity of the players trying out for the team. One of the best football movies out there; much better than the dark “Any Given Sunday (1999)” directed by Oliver Stone.
