Want to time travel to the 70's? This book feels like a time hop back to 1974. It is summer and Nell gets paid to make sure her baby brother Teddy changes out of his pajamas and doesn't forget to eat. Actually, though, her responsibilities are much more than that. Her mother left the family and the guys rely on Nell to worry about the cleaning, laundry, etc. On top of that they realize that the coffee can stashed in the freezer no longer contains the trip funds they had saved to travel to see Mt. Rushmore. Mom used them to set up her new apartment. Nell's plan is to replenish the fund hoping that making the trip will mend the tears in the family fabric. That Nell is a trooper! I love her determination and grit. Each day she starts with the newspaper headline and checks her horoscope with healthy skepticism. I love her comments on the comic strips that were popular then. Also the references to 70's TV shows, games, hobbies, etc. Having been a child during the 70's, I can definitely confirm that Daphne Kalmar has the time period nailed. What a blast from the past! I can just see that shag carpeting and all those orange and avocado color schemes. Her notes at the end provide additional historical information, and she does reference the controversy that surrounds Mt. Rushmore and its rightful ownership.
