While I found Parable of the Sower horrifyingly riveting, this second and final book in the Earthseed series fell somewhat flat, as though narrated by a disinterested observer. Even the characters within didn't seem significantly affected by the awful things that were happening to them. Every time Earthseed was mentioned my eyes began to glaze over, and the last few chapters felt rushed and empty. I'm tempted to recommend reading the first book as a standalone. It's worth noting that the presidential campaign slogan in this 1998 dystopia is "Help Us to Make America Great Again" -- perhaps we are already living in the initial stages of Ms. Butler's future.
