I admit, I did not enjoy reading "The Scarlet Letter" in high school: too many uses of the word "ignominy." However, I was pleasantly surprised by the Manga Classics adaptation! Because of the nature of the medium, Hawthorne's many descriptive passages were translated into narrative scenes, which speeds the pacing of the story. I was able to sympathize with the emotional, romantic themes of the story in a way that I wasn't able to with the original. Also, the artist translated Hawthorne's metaphors into illustrations beautifully!
