The non-American Exceptionalist version: Eisenhower, along with MacArthur and Patton, stormed the Bonus Marchers Village and slaughtered over 100 men, women and children [American men, women and children, that is]. As president, Eisenhower dispatched the CIA to overthrow Guatemala's president, Arbenz, a capitalist, but accused of being socialist, and along with murdered Guatemalans, all union organizers were also killed. Eisenhower's finanicial backer was Floyd Odlum, who was also the major investor in United Fruit, which profited from the coup. [Easily verified from papers at Eisenhower Presidential Library] Thousands of Indonesians later murdered when again CIA was dispatched there in an unsuccessful coup to overthrow the nonaligned Sukarno. Iran: their president had the audacity to believe Iranian oil should be for the Iranian people, so his government was overthrown and the Shah inserted in his place. Under Eisenhower, the lawsuit instigated by FDR's administration against the Wall Street 17 [involving super-concentration of corporate ownership by the banks, stemming from the TNEC study] was quashed.

Wonderfully enjoyable and informative book, but I did not have time to finish it.

A comprehensive and very readable biography, particularly good in the World War II section, and making a case for Ike as a much stronger President than he was once thought to be.
