Miriam Black knows when you will die.

Still in her early twenties, she's foreseen hundreds of car crashes, heart attacks, strokes, suicides, and slow deaths by cancer. But when Miriam hitches a ride with truck driver Louis Darling and shakes his hand, she sees that in thirty days Louis will be gruesomely murdered while he calls her name.

Miriam has given up trying to save people; that only makes their deaths happen. But Louis will die because he met her, and she will be the next victim. No matter what she does she can't save Louis. But if she wants to stay alive, she'll have to try.

A brutal ride with a tragic hero, burdened by a horrible curse to know the details of someone's death by skin contact. The villains in this book were the most vicious of any I have read in fiction. Wendig's prose proceeds at a fast pace. Miriam is a blue-collar hero at the edge of insanity. Her story is not for the feint-of-heart. It is brutal and unrelentingly vicious. The conclusion was satisfying, though there was a significant loose thread involving a character that made me scratch my bald head. Yes, a little distracting but never pulled me from immersion.

Fine writing. I follow Wendig's blog daily and I like his approach to writing but I'm not so into violence and cruelty. Miriam Black is just how she would have to be, with the curse of her ability to see how someone's going to die, but even though I finished it, I won't be returning to that series. Too harsh for me.

I enjoyed this book. The storyline is unique to anything else I have read, and I found some aspects humerous.

Ick. The violence is over the top. Nothing about the characters or the story was compelling enough to keep me reading this.

This rough, hardened twentysomething has a lot on her plate, and very little control over the events that are unfolding. Miriam Black is plagued with the ability to foretell how you are going to die, and try as she might, she cannot change fate. When she meets Louis the truckdriver, it comes to pass that his death may be her fault. Wracked with guilt, she spirals into a world of nefarious characters who practice extreme violence against her as Louis's death looms over her.
A very satisfying and quick read!

A very dark take on the intersection between free will and morality. Lovably, gritty characters balance out the violence that is key to the story.
