Where to start ? This is a quirky movie - sometimes it is quite campy and at other times a bit too grossly violent in that classic - "you know it when you see it" kind of way - yuck! The story is clever enough, so there was good material to work with - a young 10-year girl, who can hear, but is unable to speak, is witness to murder and as a result is pursued by the murders. It touches on some issues, in a rather odd and perhaps unintentional ways. For example there is a scene where the parents discover their daughter is missing from the hotel - now a 10 year old girl, missing in a city where she can speak the language is one thing - but when she can't speak at all? And their reaction to the situation and the hotel staff reaction is rather blasé - it just seems out of sorts with the seriousness of the moment. And the police have the same silly comments - like " she may have met up with a boyfriend" - it feels as if the lines were lifted from another movie - after all, she is 10 years old, in a city far from home and can't speak - how the hell would she have met up with a boyfriend? On the upside, there are some great shots of Amsterdam, if you like to sight-see through movies - but soon the dialogue reminds you that you are in a really bad movie - it is amateurish and out-of-synch, with characters having an American Southern accent one minute and then losing it 5 minutes later - as if the actor was practicing it for another movie down the road. Too bad, as I like the actors, William Hurt and Jennifer Tilley, as well as a pretty good supporting cast - it is just one of those movies where the parts don't fit together.
