"In 1910 Elinore Randall, a widow, and her seven-year-old daughter travel by train to face two great unknowns-- a strange land and life with a man they have never met. Elinore has contracted by mail to keep house for Clyde Stewart, a rancher living in the remote frontier near Burntfork, Wyoming. Captivated by the vast landscape, Elinore acts quickly on her secret passion: to homestead a piece of land of her own. But fulfilling her year's contract with Clyde may be as challenging as the oncoming winter-- a winter of devastating blizzards, famine and isolation."--Container.

Very good film, and I give them credit for trying to portray realistically the suffering of pioneers (and animals), but I had to leave it when winter came and the starving horse stood at the door. I knew worse was to come. So be warned, strong stomach needed.

Excellent. The hardships of ranching especially in the winter are real. This is a true story from letters gleaned from many letters written by Elinore Stewart and interviews with her elderly children I am a Rip Torn fan and found this on dashboard. Calving, butchering and branding were real. Many homesteaders froze to death or starved and never made it for the 10 year requirement. Glad we still have two copies of this movie. Be sure and watch commentary on the menu screen. Tells how the movie was made. Conchata Ferrell made many movies and is most known as the house keeper on 2 1/2 men TV sitcom.

A gritty and all too accurate account of life on the untamed, sometimes unforgiving, frontier. Your feelings will not be spared as the movie moves from hardship to hardship, yet there’s a sense of hope and perseverance that makes this movie an unforgettable tale of man’s most basic instinct to survive.

This is an unusual film. It gives you a feel for what it might have been like to settle a frontier. The characters are quiet, strong, understated. Drama evolves without a lot of words, and the film ends before you expect, as though they suddenly ran out of money.

This is an amazing depiction of the West around the turn of the century. Animals WERE HARMED in the making of this movie, so if you are squeamish about such things, this is not for you.
