In 1851, London is in the throes of the industrial revolution. But among the dirty red bricks and smokestacks are four young, thrill-seeking artists: steadfast William Holman Hunt, naive John Millais, mischievous Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and budding journalist Fred Walters, otherwise known as the Brotherhood. Their quest for artistic immortality takes them into some of the lewdest, darkest, and funniest corners of the city.

Ooops! My review exceeded the 4,000 character limit. You can see my review here, with lots of background and context, such as you might require in order to ascertain whether you wanted to invest your time:

After seeing "Effie Grey", the story of the wife Victorian art critic John Ruskin, I wanted more information about the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. After receiving an annulment of her marriage, Effie marries John Everett Millais. The Ruskin story is an intricate part of this series because the approval of Ruskin advanced the Pre-Raphaelite movement. His malignant obsessions play a role in harming young women and according to this story Ruskin was ultimately responsible for the death of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's wife, Elizabeth Siddal. She died of an overdose of laudanum, but I could find no historical reference to Ruskin's role in this event. I hoped for a good historical drama, but there is as much bodice ripping and drawer dropping as history in this BBC production. It is sort of a sexual romp through mid-nineteenth century with the brotherhood doing most of the romping. I was surprised at the quality of the history as one can usually count on the BBC. One excellent part was the inclusion of real paintings produced by the Pre-Rachaelites. Mild recommendation. Kristi & Abby Tabby

If you are into the lives of artists and their quirky hijinks, you might like this one. Lots of lovely female flesh.

Seemed more desperate than romantic! I didn't think I would make it to Disc 2 (it has 6 episodes on 2 discs). Someone else commented that they saw it on an airplane! It has lots of sex and nudity. It was based on a group of young artists. Art wasn't discussed much. I would have liked more character development from the women involved. The hat shop girl who was their model - she married one of them, another was obsessed with her- ultimately dies and the guys are consistently self-adsorbed, banal, boring. Not sure if they actually had any artistic merit or integrity.

For a BBC show I was surprised at how much sex was shown. I was a bit embarrassed to be watching this on the airplane. I liked the show, but thought they could have had much less sex.

Two words: Aidan Turner.

Very interesting, intriguing stories about the artists, their lives and romances. It took me a bit of time to get into it, but once I did, it was worthwhile! I recommend it.

England is a country with so much history, maybe they can afford to dick around with it. And so we get programs like Desperate Romantics. There are modern attitudes, situations and dialogue (especially by the female characters), and, of course people wandering around without their proper hats and gloves half the time. But the makers obviously know the art and the times, if in an unintellectual way, so their riffs are more entertaining than gratuitous. DR has just enough truth to make one curious to learn more.

Regardless of historical accuracy (or lack thereof), a terrific piece of theatre and acting. Even though the series makes it a long watch, definitely worth seeing.

The lighting ,internal architecture and costuming were each of quality , but combined were extraordinary. Strong performances by all . Shades of Timothy Dalton in Aidan Turner. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this series as strictly entertainment , not historical fact.
