According to their fans, Cheryl and Griffith Day epitomize southern hospitality; their bakery, located in Savannah, GA, has become a go-to place for comforting baked goods, vintage d├ęcor and old-fashioned allure. So, in honour of their 10th anniversary, the Days released "The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook" containing 100 favourite recipes organized into nine categories.

The book begins with a forward by celebrity chef Paula Deen, who loves the bakery so much that she rented it for her niece's bridal shower, and continues with chapters such as Breakfast, Cupcakes and Cakes, Cookies, Brownies and Bars and Savories. It also contains a useful section aimed at novice bakers covering everything from creaming butter to working with eggs. For visual appeal, the Days include appetite-inducing photos of baked goods on antique china.

Southern staples take centre stage ('Nana Cream Pie, Peach Cobbler Muffins, etc) but unexpected international fare like Guava Sweet-Cheese Turnovers and Bacon-Jam Empanadas broaden the book's repertoire. Most charmingly, the Days have injected the spirit of the bakery right into the cookbook; they interrupt recipes with tales about Savannah and anecdotes describing both the sweetness and the bitterness that accompany following your dreams.

I loved this cookbook so much I bought a copy for myself. The recipes are traditional, good old-fashioned baked treats. Not low fat so you may want to indulge in these on special occasions.

This is a cute little book. The recipes are for a more advanced baker. Also, these are very rich and fattening desserts. No skimping on these treats.

One of the best bakery cookbooks - all the recipes I've tried worked out very well.

This has a lot of traditional recipes, most are easily accessible if you have mastered making crusts.

For cookbook lovers this is a good one. I had to buy it. Will be using some of those recipes in my catering business.

Nice to read a cookbook done by people who enjoy what they do. The recipes are truly longtime winners from banana bread to carrot cake to chocolate chip cookies. Luscious photos showing the results aranged with vintage americana items accompany the recipes. For many recipes there are notes, tips, and additional suggestions for variations. All very yummy!

One of the best cookbooks out there. I love a cookbook with heavy pages you can turn, great graffics and her vintage backery is the best ever. If you ever go to Savannah, go meet this gal from Southern Illinois and her hubby, Griff. They are the nicest geniune people you will ever meet. Best of luck with the cookbook Cheryl Day!
