Inspector Sejer is investigating the brutal murder of a woman who lived alone in the middle of the woods. The chief suspect is another loner, a schizophrenic recently escaped from a mental institution. The only witness is a twelve-year-old boy, overweight, obsessed with archery, and a resident at a home for delinquents. When a demented man robs a nearby bank and accidentally takes the suspect hostage, the three mistfits are drawn into an uneasy alliance. Shrewdly, patiently, Inspector Sejer confronts a case where the strangeness of the crime is matched only by the strangeness of the criminals, and where small-town prejudices warp every piece of information he tries to collect.

Wonderfully written; excellent translation. A police procedural that spends most of its words on character development--and what interesting characters. There is no bad guy, just flawed people in untenable situations.

This is the second Karin Fossum mystery I have read. Her style of writing is moves along at a good pace, her characters are well developed and interesting - even if they are not likeable. The twists this story takes makes it difficult to predict 'who did it'. An engaging read.

Excellent read. One of the wonderful authors from Scandinavia.

This is the 2nd in the inspector sejer series and I have to admit that there is something about the way Fossum writes that gets me everytime. Her way of expressing the mental and psychological functions of the mind along with the emotional fragility of human beings makes her not an expert per say but a keen, reflective and sharp observer. She is really really sharp about the inner workings the human mind. I am already starting the 3rd book today.

#2 of Inspector Sejer series by Norwegian Karin Fossum. She writes about misfits in a way similar to Ruth Rendell. Errki escapes from the clinic and is in a bank when Morgan robs it and takes Errki hostage. Most of the book is about the interesting relationship between a misfit and a criminal. Also involved is a boy Kannick who left a boys' home with his bow and arrow. I won't give away any more of the plot, which is good reading.
