A nice story, enjoyable if you like allegories. It was too much of an allegory for me, it felt to heavy-handed and because the characters had to fit into the Christ-Salvation allegory, were not as well rounded as most fantasy characters should be. I wanted to root for the happy ending of princess and her prince - but it wasn't satisifying enough as a love story. He was too stiff, too unreachable. And because it was obviously allegorical, the story was pretty predictable.

I really enjoyed this book. At the beginning I struggled a bit to get into it but by the middle I had a hard time putting it down. It's an allegory, with Aethelbald being the Christ-figure. I loved Stengl's writing style and the way the characters spoke. It was a bit old-fashioned, but it fit the story wonderfully. The plot is exciting and some parts made me want to cry. I think Stengl does a fantastic job of showing Jesus' love in the character of Aethelbald. I recommend this book to all teenagers and adults, and anyone who likes fantasy. I am looking forward to reading more of the Goldstone books.
