The moment when, instead of stabbing to death the German family trapped in the cellar, Kitty suddenly throws the knife away and falls to the floor weeping - this is the moment she wins and the Nazis lose. They couldn`t do it - they couldn`t make her one of them. A terrifying narrative of the unbelievable, it is the very obscene farcicalness of the Final Solution that let it exist - NO ONE COULD BELIEVE IT! Indeed, if the Nazis themselves hadn`t had such a anal retentive need to take photographs, make eight copies of everything, then lock the original document in a secret wall safe just in case, there are many who would still claim it never happened (the ones, no doubt, who own a well-thumbed copy of 'The Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion' and are sure the Jews tattooed themselves just to be ornery.)
