Gritty, heartrending and unputdownable -- the story of two sisters sent first to an English, then an Australian orphanage in the aftermath of World War 2. Rita and Rosie Stevens are only nine and five years old when their widowed mother marries a violent bully called Jimmy Randall and has a baby boy by him. Under pressure from her new husband, she is persuaded to send the girls to an orphanage -- not knowing that the papers she has signed will entitle them to do what they like with the children. And it is not long before the powers that be decide to send a consignment of orphans to their sister institution in Australia. Among them -- without their family's consent or knowledge -- are Rita and Rosie, the throwaway children. * * * * * Enjoyed this book? The Lost Soldier by Diney Costeloe is out 1st July 2015. Took me a while to get into it but towards the end really picked up. Ending was really good in a happy/sad way.

This book had me hooked! I love historical fiction, and this book fit into this genre. Another good read is "Children of the Train", based on true happenings.

It's not often a book "hooks" you to the point you can't put it down. This is excellent.

The fact that this book is so highly rated makes me think people love dramatic tragedy. While everybody has hard times, for this many bad things happen to the same characters gets tiring without any redemption. Costeloe tells the story well enough (the 3 star rating) but honestly, abandonment, a corrupt orphan system, conniving people, abusive alcoholic dads, murder, arson, prostitution, suicide, domestic violence, sexual abuse, rape, theft and car accidents. I mean, holy smokes! Half of these topics would have been saturating on their own not to mention taxing on the reader (and triggering).

Though this is fiction, the UK did ship off orphans who were meant for temporary care only. There is a movie called Sunshine and Oranges based on the true stories of this era starring Emily Watson.

If you like drama, ongoing tragedy and romance type novels (Costeloe writes romance as well), I imagine this would fit the bill. If you prefer historical fiction that is plausible and realistic, this is a miss.

Tho. not a true story, I believe these things do happen, very well written and a real page turner!
