"Finely wrought and inventive, Captain Fantastic surely earns the lofty praise of its title."--Guardian.
"'Captain Fantastic' should connect in a major way with those looking to be swept up and moved by such a fundamental human experience."--Variety.
"Gorgeously photographed, and as loosey-goosey as its hero, 'Captain Fantastic' takes some unexpected turns."--New York Daily News.
Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, isolated from society, a devoted father dedicates his life to transforming his six young children into extraordinary adults. But when a tragedy strikes the family, they are forced to leave this self-created paradise and begin a journey into the outside world that challenges his idea of what it means to be a parent and brings into question everything he's taught them.

A little stilted at times and overly sentimental.

This film is both hilarious and philosophically deep/provocative. It's something I don't recall seeing in a film before this one. About midway through the film, the novel "Lolita" is brought up...which was "interesting." In some ways, this film is a lot like that novel.

I was thoroughly impressed with this one. It was not only poignant but had me inspired. There is a lot to think about and discuss with this movie. Well done.

Loved the story, but there is a bit too much unnecessary cussing.

I put off watching this movie because it seemed weird. Now I want to watch it again and again. The story is well-written, the children are amazing, and I loved watching this dad struggle with how to raise his kids in the manner that he and his wife thought best. The a cappella version of "Sweet Child of Mine" alone is worth the price of admission.

The best movie from 2016 that you didn’t see! Quirky, original, and showcasing a great soundtrack, this film is about an eccentric father and his six children raised on a remote homestead in the Pacific Northwest forced to enter the outside world after their mother passes away. I loved it!

I didn't know just what to expect, but I'm a fool for Viggo. Pearls of wisdom & some cautionary points set against just how much free rein & honest discussion to do with children. To my taste is he never talked down to the children, he tried to guide. At times I felt a bit too often with a heavy hand (the sheer cliff climbing) felt close to abuse in proving a point. There was a feeling of fierce love & extreme dedication to the principles being taught.

These children will grow into adults well prepared for natural disaster. I wonder just how they'd adjust to society in general - take the scene where the family verbalized on over-eaters. It's well known Americans & much of the other societies don't get enough exercise & know too little about the natural world. The book learning so well displayed in this film is exceptional, but some common sense seemed a bit light.

Fine acting all around, gorgeous scenery, some humor & sadness well balanced. Liked the aspect in describing the manner of dealing with death, but I'd seriously question getting away with a pyre.

This movie goes right up at the top of my list of favorites. It will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you wonder. . . No good guys or bad guys, just everyone doing their very best for their families, and we all know that ain't always easy. Gorgeous American scenery, particularly beautiful shots of the Pacific Northwest. Great acting and music too!

A sweet, old fashioned movie with a simple moral about living off the grid and out of the grip of The Man (i.e. the rest of human society). Too simple, IMHO, but maybe I'm The Man, and don't know it. Worth seeing, though, for the cast, who bring a sympathy and credibility to the story that it otherwise would not have. Pairing it with a 1970s film like Harold and Maude or Billy Jack would be an interesting evening's viewing.

When you have sex with a woman, be gentle and listen to her. Treat her with respect and dignity even if you don't love her. Always tell the truth. Always take the high road. Live each day like it could be your last. Drink it in. Be adventurous, be bold, but savour it. It goes fast. Don't die.
