A hilarious laugh-out-loud story of a new Sheriff in town, who can't stay up past eight o'clock at night, but can get the job done one way or 'tother. My son and I love this book and crack up every time we read it! Great drawings as well.

When a new sheriff comes to town, you better hope his paleontology is up to snuff. Otherwise, how will he ever catch the gang of criminals known as the Toad brothers? Don't wait for that to make sense. Just read the book! It's one of the funniest children's books I have ever read. The new sheriff rides a tortoise. The outlaws kiss livestock on the lips. The dialogue is taciturn and perfectly crafted to be hilarious, not a word is wasted. Shea and Smith make an excellent team!

Bob Shea intentionally uses slang and accents in the text, such as when one of the Toad brothers refers to "dineysaurs." Such choices help to build the weird world of Drywater Gulch, which is serviced wonderfully by Lane Smith's illustrations. The image of Kid Sheriff slowly riding his tortoise through the desert flora is both funny and beautiful.

If you are a-hankerin' to use your best cowboy voice, here's your chance! Sheriff Ryan rides into town (slowly, on a tortoise) and makes the town safe for decent folk again without breaking a sweat. Hilarious and deadpan at the same time, this will appeal to all ages. Cowboys AND dinosaurs-- who could ask for more?
