Every night when his parents turn off the light, strange creatures descend from the black space where the ceiling used to be... First comes one, then another and then more and more. They stand all around him, staring, not saying a word. And then, worst of all comes the dark shapeless one that tells him, "I am what there is before there is anything there..."

Liniers' art, reminiscent of Hergé and other great comic book artists, portrays the little boy's growing terror and his frantic dash for his parents' bedroom. Combined with hand-lettering, it creates the feeling of a graphic novel for very young readers.

Destined to become a classic about nighttime fears (like Paul Galdone's The Teeny-Tiny Woman), this story will resonate with young children who are afraid of the dark, who might be reassured to see that although the little boy's fears don't go away, he does find a way to cope with them.

This book is definitely scarier than your average picture book fodder, but it's an important resource for children who need help talking with their grownup about night-fears. The story is about a girl and boy who -- while peering into the darkness of their room at night -- begin to see small monsters landing at the foot of their bed. Eventually, they go sleep with mom and dad, but the monsters appear there, too. There is no uplifting closure to the book - just the final image of the monsters sitting at the foot of the bed. Read this one first before deciding if it's right for your child.

This book really scratched by Fortian itch ans also satisfied my love of things liminal and mysterious. I will buy this book hoping that my toddler will grow up with it and it will have some impact on him.
As an aspiring picture book creator, I really wish I had done this one myself.

This is a pretty creepy story and while I really enjoyed it... I would strongly caution parents to read it first as it is a little scary.

Kind of a cool look at night time fears.
