If you want to know how Lestat became the Vampire Lestat, you'll want to read this follow up to Interview. We learn all about his background before being turned and why he treats his minions as he does. Make sure to read Queen of the Damned right after for the entire tale.

After his role in “Interview with a Vampire”, it is a bit difficult to get used to Lestat as protagonist, especially since he is so melodramatic. In “The Vampire Lestat”, however, I was glad to see the other side of Louis’ tale and I also liked the new vampire characters introduced in this book.

In the second and, in my opinion, best book in the vampire chronicles (much less of Louis' whining!), we learn that Lestat isn't at all the monster Louis thinks he is... he's a monster all right, but context is everything. We get to visit the 18th century of his youth, meet the loves of his life, follow him on his eternal quest, vicariously enjoy his passions, see his view of his relationship with Louis, and, quite simply, fall in love with him (if you go for the tortured bad boy type). A gorgeous book.
