I was just expecting more, I guess. It wasn't bad, it just didn't reach its full potential. I was still waiting for the dangerous scary journey when it was over.

I liked this better than the Handmaid's Tale.

Think Handmaiden's Tale meets Black Mirror. Perfection in it's terrifying almost-reality, but endearing it's triumph of human spirit & friendship. Absolutely believe the title is has two meanings. Fantastic & highly recommended. <3

Dystopia for Grown ups in a society where offenders are live streamed for 48 hours, then painted a color based on their offense for a year. Main character Hannah, charged with the murder of her unborn child, struggles to re-enter society.…

Definitely a page-turner. In a very Handmaid's Tale-type future, women's rights have been subjugated by extreme right-wing fundamental Christians. People who commit crimes undergo "melachroming," where they are dyed a very vivid color,…

Sometimes when I read a book, it seems that the author is writing it in hopes that it will become a movie. The story is set up, builds to a climactic action scene, some unlikely miracle happens and the problem is resolved. This is one of…

Great concept and epic story! This was a really great feminist dystopian fiction story with a modern conceptualuzation of not only the criticism that accompanies women's choices in general, but their rights as well. I did feel that some…

Hillary Jordan's writing was fabulous with great pace and the character portrayal of Hannah made you really care about her. I had to keep picking up the book to check on Hannah! The world created by Jordan could definitely be expanded…

It was hard to put this one down! A well written, modern day take on The Scarlet Letter, with a strong, sympathetic main character. Fans of The Handmaid's Tale and Red Clocks will find much to admire in this thought-provoking story.

Fast paced with influences of "The Handmaid's Tale".

When She Woke is a dystopian riff on The Scarlet Letter, but infinitely more discussable. The concept of turning "criminals" into brightly pigmented reality TV fodder alone is enough to talk about for an entire book club, but the rest of…

A fast-paced, dystopian thriller.

I really enjoyed this book, which is sort of a modern take on The Scarlett Letter. The dystopian future painted by the author feels realistic, especially with some of the 'alt-right Christians' holding power in the United States of recent…

I really liked this author and she captivated me with this awful world she created in the near future. However the middle turned into a young adult romance adventure complete with obligatory lesbian sex, which was nice, however the end was…

One of the most discussable books for book groups. A speedy plot in a thought-provoking setting. Imagine a new system of crime and punishment that allows all members of society to see what crimes have been committed based on skin color.…

Interestingly enough, the concept of people being turned different colors based on the crimes they're convicted of is fascinating, but strangely it isn't as much of a big deal as you'd expect.

In this near future, conservative christian America, a person's skin is genetically altered if they commit a crime. The colour denotes the type and it is irrelevant whether the act was accidental or intentional. Hannah's crimson marks her…

This is an amazing book I read it in one sitting, I couldn't stop. Very reminiscent of Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale, as well as The Scarlet Letter. Although this is so original you won't think of it as similar until you have read it…

The first 3 quarters were great. The last part felt rushed and a little confusing. Still worth the read.

Advertised as a re-imagining of The Scarlet Letter. I HATED the Scarlet Letter with a passion; I devoured this book in 3 days. In the very near and familiar future USA, most criminals are not locked up--they are free within the…

**SPOILERS AHEAD** "The Scarlet Letter re imagined via Margaret Atwood." Totally justified. This was a fantastic book. The world is so realistic and oh so close to being present day in so many ways that it is just as horrifying as 1984…

A fascinating reinterpretation of The Scarlet Letter, Jordan creates a fascinating narrative that is equal parts character study and dystopian novel. The future she creates is fascinating in its explorations of the penal system and our…

I wish I could give this book two ratings - one for the first 2/3, and one for the last 1/3. The first 2/3 was really good. The premise was interesting, the writing was great, the characters relatable...all the makings of a wonderful…

Review, part 1 ----- ADULT CONTENT. NOT FOR CHILDREN OR YOUNG ADULTS. ----- First, I want to be up front and say that this book is about abortion. It is basically pro-choice propaganda hiding behind the sub-genre of dystopian…
