For all Neal Gaiman's fascination with Norse Gods, the Indian God Ganesha is very important to this very long story. Enjoy.

I first tried this book about five years ago and could not get past the first chapter. I tried it again but got the extended version this time and it sucked me into the story faster. I was recommended this book to try again and glad I am.…

Such a twist of events, and I well narrated story. The more you understand the Norse pantheon, the more you see the subtle, tongue-in-cheek dialog and actions not caught by the casual reader.

I do not read science fiction / fantasy. Because of the recommendation of a friend I tried this book. I rather liked the first part of the book and understand the importation of old gods into the American milieu. I liked the visit to…

Manages to be funny, magical and gory at the same time. A long read, particularly with small faded print and italics but a page-turner nonetheless. Sort of irreverently spiritual and also a murder-mystery, which was unexpected. I enjoyed…

I read this book for the 52 books in 52 weeks reading challenge. I used the 2022 prompt read a book with an author's photo on the back cover. It is also on listopia's 300 books everyone should read once list. I liked it better than Neil…

Extremely Long but captivating. I thought it was a clever concept, a light weight lesson in history/folklore while still being a mythical thriller. I did favor some characters more that others (no biggie) Very vivid creating clear vibrant…

In the universe of Neil Gaiman's "American Gods", pagan gods exist and walk the Earth in material form. They are called into existence when someone begins worshipping them and their power is proportional to the number of worshippers and…

Oh my God it would not end and it was so boring. The main character was one-dimensional and merely a plot piece.

I've finished this book twice and, in theory, it should be right up my alley. But I can't. It feels unrealized... a good premise, but that doesn't follow through on its worldbuilding. New gods of Technology and Television and Money are…

Neil Gaiman weaves an original tale that is both delightful and disturbing, modern and historic, funny, and exquisitely sad. Early in the book it was clear I'd be wanting a personal copy for our home library, as 'American Gods' is just too…

America personified. Through this gripping road trip tale through a fictional rendition of America with locations like the frozen community of Lakeside to the battleground of Rock City. Gaiman can deconstruct the stereotypes and the…

Just not into gratuitous violence right now. Maybe some other time in my life I'll go back and try again. For now, I'm going back to Somerset Maugham and P.G. Wodehouse.

So clever, and wonderfully weird! Absolutely loved the dichotomy between the new gods and old. Shadow was a solid character and I truly enjoyed his journey.

I liked it for the most part but it's too long (editor!) and was, at times, pretty grim. The ideas behind it were clever and Gaiman clearly had fun throwing the giant mythology book at the reader, covering gods large and small, famous…

Always worth a reread

This is by far my favorite book by Neil Gaiman. I own more than one copy for some odd reason and can't tell you how many times I've read it! I know it's fiction but..... Definitely check this out if you are into 'fantasy' fiction

"A town isn't a town without a bookstore" Neil, your words carry wisdom and amazing chatacter. Today, I'd like to borrow your phrase and state that 'a library is a library when you have a card'. John Lewis chose a path to claim a right…

I read this during the pandemic. The quote "a town isn't a town without a book store" is from this book. Its on page 252. I thought it was way too long.

Very interesting read and interesting concept. I felt the ending was a little rushed and lack luster but the depth of the main character Shadow was fascinating.

Definitely unique but I can't say I enjoyed it much. Mostly I'd just chalk it up as weird, also I think Gaiman has a tendency to get sidetracked and spend a long time on things that are only tangentially relevant.

Patience and appreciation for ambiance are required to enjoy American Gods, but if you’ve got those in stock, it’s an excellent read. The tenth anniversary version is an earlier, longer draft of the book. It’s full of extra tidbits and…

I listened to the full-cast recording of the audiobook. I enjoyed the listening experience immensely. This complex, expansive, and thought-provoking novel holds my attention despite its immense length. The writing is plain and…

Why not 5 stars? In many ways, I think this is the strongest of Gaiman's offerings. Broader in scope than his short stories and YA. Broader in ambition than Stardust... and I like all of this. There are moments, passages to reread aloud…

A solid read. I enjoyed the meandering philosophical ideas running through the book.
