I read this book because of the simple fact that it challenged French values and society at the time. This book tells a story of a man named Charles Bovary, a provincial doctor (technically a health officer) in northern France. He marries the daughter of one of his patients named Emma. Emma eventually becomes bored in the marriage and engages extramarital affairs. Emma is one of those characters even if you love or hate you will find a piece of yourself inside her. What I found in her that I also see in myself is the fact she often would depend on her religious faith in times of great despair and then forget it once all was well once again. The character of Charles I personally didn't find quite remarkable, but I did feel sorry for him in a way.
I really enjoyed the writing of this story, this book was originally published in French, but the English translation maintains the flow of the story. This story is very similar to the typical plots where the female protagonist deviates from the norms and values of the society that she belongs to like Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbevilles, yet it still is able to distinguish itself from other similar tales.I read this book because of the simple fact that it challenged French values and society at the time. This book is quite different from any other novel I have read by Charles Dickens. Initially, when I started reading the book, I did not like it because I found the plot very dry and the events of the novel very confusing to comprehend. However, as I progressed, I became more emotionally invested with the characters and began to appreciate the way the plot effortlessly switches between the two cities of London and Paris. I didn't find any of the characters completely exceptional other than Mr. Manette and his shoemaking habits. The conclusion of the novel was very moving which is what ended up winning me over. This book is quite different from any other novel I have read by Charles Dickens. I loved this book. It is quite lengthy so I tried to read 100 pages each day to finish this book in less than a week. From the beginning the book throws you right in, introducing you to the various characters and the intertwined plots of the novel. There are many duels, secret meetings at the Louvre and more! What I really enjoyed about this book is the fact that although it is a fictional book, I found myself learning new things about French culture that I did not know previously. The book's time setting is before the French Revolution so it was interesting to learn the power that the monarchy and the Church had in France. I also loved the strong female antagonist of the book. She is comparable to Lady Macbeth to a certain degree.
Overall awesome book and I highly recommend!I loved this book. It is quite lengthy so I tried to read 100 pages each day to finish this book in less than a week. From the beginning the book throws you right in, introducing you to the various characters and the intertwined plots of the novel.…
